Ever since I was 16 years old I wanted to change my body. Living in an old fashioned Italian home it was easy to pack on the pounds and I was never happy with the way I looked. I began running outdoors and joined a gym. I would run 5-6 days a week and also attended spinning class and boot camp type exercise classes. I always had a passion for fitness but this just wasn’t cutting it. I even started a home workout program called “Turbojam” and I lost a couple pounds and then quickly hit the lovely plateau.

I still remember when I attended one of Michelle’s classes at Fit City… it was a Friday morning and the workout was intense. I always thought I was so fit and strong but this clearly showed me I had no idea what I was doing! I continued to attend her classes, they kicked me in the butt and at the end of it I felt like I actually accomplished something. I used to always think, the longer the workout the better, this was clearly thrown away quickly once introduced to Crossfit. I started Crossfit in October of 2010 and my body quickly began to change. Definition started to show, my legs became more toned (which I tried for years to change ... thank you Crossfit!) and my strength increased. I truly never thought I could accomplish as much as I have today. I never thought I could do a pull up without a band, climb a robe, deadlift 175lbs, and the list goes on.

I also knew nutrition played a role with fitness but never really noticed the large impact it has. I thought I ate pretty healthy before, but that was thrown out the window again when introduced to Paleo. This way of eating helped in achieving the results I have with Crossfit. Nutrition and fitness comes hand in hand with one another, it is one package. Living with an old fashioned Italian mother you could just imagine what our family dinners consisted of; pastas, pizza, sandwiches, bread, bread, and more bread!! I learned about Paleo and was so intrigued with what I thought was supposed to be “healthy”. I used to only look at calories, fat, and carbs. Now I look at the ingredient list FIRST, sugar, and carbohydrates. I began to cook for myself and also explained the benefits to eating paleo with my family. Now, I have my old fashioned Italian mother, sister, brother-in-law, and close friends all eating Paleo!

My passion for fitness, nutrition, and an overall healthy lifestyle has never changed, yet I have become more educated with how to get the results you want. Crossfit has changed my life; it has made me more positive and has given me the confidence to accomplish goals I never thought I could. I will continue to motivate others to be active and healthy because it is an amazing feeling. I have never felt this healthy and strong in my life! Thank you Crossfit!

A couple years ago I was just your average guy with your average gym membership who would go a few times a week and do some sets of weights in order to try and stay in shape, but it wasn't working very well, and before long I was so unmotivated by the gym that I was barely even able to drag myself in there 1 or 2 times a week, then my son was born and for a year I was a relative stranger to the gym or working out at all. I wanted to get back in better shape and that's why I came to Crossfit.

I walked in one morning and later that day I was doing the introductory workout with Ryan. It resulted in a WOD-DNF as I nearly fell over with dizziness and nausea during 50 air squats. After a 2 hr recovery lying on my living room floor I took on the challenge to keep coming for more.

After 6 months of Crossfit I can say that I've gotten alot stronger and am happy with the results I've seen. I joke about it, but in all seriousness my main goal is to attend 3 times a week and I figure once I get there the rest will take care of itself because it's a great environment where you can't help but give 100% because everyone around you is. I wish I could attend 5 days a week, but with a FT and a PT job as well as a 1 and 1/2 yr old son and a great wife I simply can't find the time. But my motto is that you do what you can and try to give it your all. I also embrace the ideals of Paleo, although I am not strict I try to make paleo meals for myself and my family and eat paleo snacks as much as possible because in a world of processed food and quick meals it is far healthier and will provide you with the best body fuel. I'm also looking forward to my son getting older and bringing him to Crossfit Kids.

My goal at the gym it is to be able to do multiple Muscle-ups, but beyond that I just want to keep attending, getting stronger, and having fun pushing myself and others in WOD's.

I love the sign on the front door of Crossfit Newmarket Central: to me it says "get in here, don't shortchange yourself and give it all you've got".

Doug Lennox

Doug Lennox, age 52. I joined Crossfit Newmarket Central in December of 2010. During that time I averaged about 4-5 exercise sessions per week plus I attended two diet related programs, a 3 week sugar detox and later on, a 8 week Paleo program. (The diet programs were run by Brandi McCarthy, thanks Brandi, they were great!). My improvements have been dramatic; I have lost over 20 lbs. and almost 6 inches from my waistline. I am in better shape now than I have ever been - even at 30 when I ran daily.  I cannot say enough about the positive feedback I have received from both Ryan and Michelle, as well as their ‘gentle’ prod when I would “accidently” not complete the full movement of some exercise. They are both very good at modifying the day’s program to suit the ability of each participant, ensuring each gets a complete workout, yet each having radically different weights or rubber band assists. When I first started I was always using the largest bands, whereas now there is only one exercise that I need to use the smallest band (and I am working on dropping that one). Had it not been for the modification of my programs in the early days, I probably would have dropped out due to sheer frustration. The last point I would like to make is how friendly all the participants are. Most of the regulars know each other by name and Michelle and Ryan know everyone by name. This ties the whole program together, making you want to come back, even when you are still a bit sore from the last class.  I would highly recommend joining Crossfit, no matter what your current age or ability is, if I can do it, anyone can.

Honestly I have to give both of you credit for all the help and motivation
you have given me in the past two years! It’s funny that I initially joined
for a month as I thought my knee  would not last, yet two years later I have
done at least four CrossFit competitions, an 18KM tough mudder and am
training for a full iron man.

Thanks Doug

After turning 40 I decided there was no time like the present to get my body in shape.  I had never been overweight in my life, but never really felt strong, energetic or fit either. With no sports or gym background, I came in for a trial class and was very inspired by what I saw.  People doing pushups, pullups, jumping on boxes and lifting weights.  The weights scared me a bit but I was assured that I would have proper training and coaching and I'd never be left alone to lift really heavy things.  Then I decided to jump in and do my best.  After workouts I felt exhilarated and I slept a lot those first couple of months.  Slowly over time I noticed that I was getting faster and more efficient in my workouts and I wasn't panting for breath so much. My pants started to fit better and I was getting better quality sleep because I was giving my body the "good stress" that it needed at the gym.  I decided to stop eating grains and sugar 6 months ago and again noticed improvement in my athletic performance and self confidence.  I have a lot of respect for the members and the trainers at Crossfit Newmarket Central, and always look forward to going in.  It has been one year now since I first walked through that door and I feel better than ever.  My goal is to master double-unders and do pull-ups without the help of an elastic band.

Thanks Ryan and Michelle for everything.

I came to take a look at the CrossFit Newmarket Central in August of 2010 for my swim team to see if it was good enough for them and Ryan and Michelle made my try Cindy but ONLY for 10 minutes... it´s sad to say but true that the next 3 days I basically could not move BUT I loved it. Here is the workout for everyone, you have trainers that push you but also understand that you can´t do EVERYTHING full on and that is what I needed. Now I get a perfect workout every time I go there and in just one month took off 15 pounds and got stronger. If you get into it and keep up with your schedule you'll get hooked. I LOVE IT!!!"

To whom it may concern,

I just wanted to pass on some great feedback I’ve received about your facility. I had a new client today that attends your classes and couldn’t stop raving about how great she has felt since joining your gym. She also spoke very highly about both owners and said they help a lot with biomechanics and preventing injuries. I am so happy to know about you now! I’m always looking for a safe facility to refer clients too where we don’t have to worry about their injuries/issues get worse while they get in shape. I will definitely have to come in and pick up some cards so that I can send people your way (and if I can switch my schedule around that CrossFit fundamentals looks like something I need in my life!).

Secondly, I wanted to thank you for telling your clients about Active Release Techniques – I know you have someone in Newmarket you refer to but you mentioning it to this client allowed her to find me online (a bit closer to her residence). For such a useful technique it doesn’t get enough recognition in Canada and it’s nice to know it is respected by your gym.

Thank you, and congratulations on having a facility that people believe in so much!

To CNC,

When I first joined CrossFit, it was basically because I followed Ryan from another gym, and he had helped me lose weight for my wedding. After having a baby via C-section, and trying to deal with other obstacles in life, losing weight wasn’t easy at all.

Then, my hubby and I were surprised with another pregnancy. I left CrossFit for a little bit and came back after I gave birth via C-section again. At this point, I had two babies under 2, an obscene amount of extra fat around the mid-section and I was headed for a downward spiral of near depression and very poor eating habits. Finally I called Ryan & Michelle and said “I NEED HELP!”

After a few personal training sessions to feel out what my capabilities were, I started the CrossFit program. I came almost every day for a month, then two. Michelle would even watch my son while I worked out.  I did the Paleo Challenge, and the Sugar Detox programs and they helped me with my eating habits. I thought I was eating right, but I learned I wasn't eating enough for my new lifestyle!

It wasn’t until almost a year of fulltime CrossFitting that the Wholelife Challenge came to be. I joined thinking, “what is there to lose except inches?” And that is exactly what happened. All I can say is this really opened my eyes about eating healthy/paleo and the reactions your body gives from the food you put inside. It came at a pivotal time in my life too. I needed to have a kick in the patoot to help me realize it’s not all about weightlifting. You need to be putting the right fuel in the tank to make the vehicle run properly!!!!

I've been doing CrossFit consistently for over a year now and eating paleo for about 6 months, and all I can say is, it’s because of the CNC team. Ryan and Michelle have opened my eyes, pulled me from the rut I was in, and got me results I could only dream of before!! CrossFit has really given me a positive outlet in my life. There are great people who support each other like a family, they know you by name and it feels like home, and there is a sense of belonging when I walk through the front door.

No other gym has given me these results, and that’s because CNC isn’t just a gym. It’s more than that. It’s a “box” filled with shared desire and passion for weight lifting and creating the best you, you can be. CNC is making dreams of being strong and healthy inside and out, come true. Michelle, Ryan, Katrina, Andrew and Justin, you truly are amazing human beings and I thank you so much for being positive influences and helping me find myself.

I have become a better wife, mother, friend and athlete. I have respect and passion and it’s driven from CNC. Thank you for helping me achieve my goals and to achieve them with proper technique and form. You truly are a blessing to the CrossFit community and me.

Joyanne responds  to an email that we gave her for completing her first year at CrossFit Newmarket Central

Happy One Year Anniversary From CrossFit Newmarket Central!

"Most importantly, I should thank you guys and your amazing team for getting me to where I am just one year later.

Today I warmed up my Clean and Jerk with last Fall's PR (personal record) weight.

I did reflect back on my book this morning. Every workout in Feb and March was scaled back in weight and/or reps. I was still using a band for my pull ups, couldn't do a double under if my life depended on it, couldn't drop my butt below parallel on a squat, and thought that a handstand push up would never be possible, ever! Now I can do it all...

Everyday I am reminded of all the awesome things I am capable of. And this doesn't stop at CrossFit - it is reflected in so many areas of my daily life at work and at home.

You guys have definitely changed my life for the better, and I will be forever grateful.

Thank you both!

xo

"The Best thing about CrossFit is that it helps to get rid of the Pregnancy Belly Mush. It doesn't take away the stretch marks but it has made by stomach so much firmer and muscular."

Thanks again,

As you can tell I'm totally addicted to CrossFit!!

Rob Sinclair,

"My experience at CNC over the past year has been phenomenal.  I've been involved in the fitness industry for over 15 years, both personally and professionally, and have to say that I've been nothing but impressed during my time here as a member.  The quality of coaching has been outstanding, as seen by my consistently improved performance.  But my greatest takeaway has been the connections that I've made in this amazing community.  The sense of mutual support, encouragement, and comradery is palpable from your first day, and only grows stronger over time.  Ryan and Michelle and their coaches have built a culture where everyone feels welcome, important, and part of the "team", even in this fairly individual sport.   I have, and will continue to, recommend you and your facility to anyone and everyone.  Thank you so much for everything.  You've changed yet another life for the better."

Cheers,

Rob

To CNC,

When I first joined Crossfit, I was terrified. Totally convinced that there was no way I could do any of these things. But the trainers are amazing and I quickly learned the skills and gained confidence.  I continue to be amazed at how quickly I improve. I've improved my strength so much in the past year, and it's helped me become a much faster runner.  Not only that, I'm mentally stronger and more confident. I feel like I can take on anything.

I recently renewed my Crossfit membership and realized that it was the first time I have ever renewed a gym membership.  I've had so many gym memberships over the years and never renewed a single one.  I don't even like to refer to my Crossfit membership as a gym membership.  It is so much more than a gym.  The support of the trainers and my fellow Crossfitters is invaluable.

Crossfit has quite literally changed my life.  Everybody should do it.

World Class Fitness in 100 Words!

Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.  Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.
